Awards & Recognition

The Awards & Recognition Committee develops and implements a program of merit awards and recognition of achievement to honour forestry professionals and practitioners by:

  • developing and recommending to Council categories of recognition and awards for forestry-related accomplishment in Ontario and for service to the Association;
  • developing and implementing a process of annual candidate nomination and recipient selection for each award category;
  • recommending to Council an annual slate of award winners; and
  • preparing regular articles of tribute for publication in The Professional Forester newsletter.

Awards currently in place are:

Honoured Professional

This award, normally presented annually to one individual, recognizes professional foresters who have made exemplary and significant contribution to the Ontario Professional Foresters Association or to forestry in Ontario.  A plaque is presented to the recipient.

Criteria
The recipient will be a current or past member of the Association; and will have performed outstanding, long-term service to the Association and/or have made significant contribution to the practice of forestry, the management or administration of forests, the education of foresters or forest research in Ontario.

Nominations
Nominations for awards or recognition may be made by any member of the Association, and must be received by the Executive Director of the Association or the Chair of the Awards & Recognition Committee on or before March 31 each year.

Each nomination shall include:

  • Name, address, age, title, position;
  • Education, honours, awards or other recognition;
  • Association membership and involvement;
  • Membership in other societies and organizations;
  • A concise statement to include the relevant achievements of the nominee and indicating the significance of the accomplishments to the Association or to Ontario forestry; and
  • Two additional letters of endorsement supporting the nomination.

Fernow Award (formerly the Forester of the Year Award)                                     

This award is named in honour of B.E. Fernow, the first Dean of Forestry (University of Toronto) in Canada.  This award may be presented annually to up to two individuals to recognize more recently registered professional foresters who have made notable contributions to the Ontario Professional Foresters Association or to forestry in Ontario.  Candidates for this award must be registered members of the association and have graduated from a forestry degree program within the last ten years. A plaque is presented to the recipient.

Criteria
The recipient will be a member of the Association; will have received a first degree in forestry less than ten years prior to the year in which the nomination is made; and will have made a major contribution to the work of the Association or to forestry in Ontario during the year prior to nomination.

Nominations
Nominations for awards or recognition may be made by any member of the Association, and must be received by the Executive Director of the Association or the Chair of the Awards & Recognition Committee on or before the last Friday in February each year.

Each nomination shall include:

  • Name, address, age, title, position;
  • Education, honours, awards or other recognition;
  • Association membership and involvement;
  • Membership in other societies and organizations;
  • A concise statement to include the relevant achievements of the nominee and indicating the significance of the accomplishments to the Association or to Ontario forestry;
  • One additional letter of endorsement supporting the nomination; and
  • Proof of the date of forestry graduation.

John H. Sellers Award

This award was established by OPFA Council in memory of John H. Sellers, R.P.F., a member of the Association since 1962. John Sellers was a staunch supporter of OPFA and the forestry profession.  Among many contributing activities, John established the OPFA website in 1998 and actively participated as the committee's inaugural, and only, chair until his untimely passing in January, 2005. 

The Award is to be presented each year in recognition of outstanding achievement in the promotion and awareness of professional forestry in Ontario. 

Criteria
The recipient will be a member of the Association and, through activities carried out in a particular year or over several years, will have made substantial and/or continuing contribution to the promotion and awareness of professional forestry in Ontario.

Nominations
Nominations for awards or recognition may be made by any member of the Association, and must be received by the Executive Director of the Association or the Chair of the Awards & Recognition Committee on or before the last Friday in February each year.

Each nomination for an award shall include:

  • Name, address, title, position;
  • Education, honours, awards or other recognition;
  • Association membership and involvement;
  • Membership in other societies and organizations;
  • A concise statement to include the relevant achievements of the nominee and indicating the significance of the forestry promotion and awareness accomplishments of the candidate in Ontario;

The Herridge Award                                               

Named for a past Member who led both in and out of Government and is best remembered for his breadth of accomplishments and persistence within Forestry. This Award is to recognize one or more significant accomplishment in any aspect of Professional Forestry in mid-career. While planning for this award presumed one recipient when there is a worthy candidate, the Awards & Recognition Committee may recognize more than one candidate in a given year.

The Zavitz Award

The award is named for E.J. Edmund Zavitz, Ontario’s first Provincial Forester. Known as “The Man Who Saved Ontario with Trees and Determination,” Dr. Zavitz is the subject of a biographical book, he has a forest named for him in Norfolk County and a plaque in his memory has been erected at the Guelph Arboretum.  The award recognizes significant contribution to Forest Conservation.

The Jorgensen-Morsink Award

The Award is named for Eric Jorgensen, Professor at University of Toronto and University of Guelph who fought to see Urban Forestry as a recognized subject and who oversaw the first Master’s graduates in that aspect of our discipline; and for Willem “Bill” Morsink, an urban forestry graduates, who worked in this field in Windsor, Toronto and North York and was a passionate advocate of the Ontario Urban Forestry Council for which he authored the two Urban Forestry Scrapbooks. This Award recognizes significant accomplishments in the field of Urban Forestry.

The Bayly Award

The award is named for G.H.U. “Terk” Bayly. Among other senior posts, Terk was Deputy Minister of the Department of Lands and Forests (1966-71), Secretary of Cabinet, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Foundation, the Niagara Escarpment Commission and the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust.  Although a forestry graduate and a significant influence in our field, Terk was not an OPFA Member. This Award recognizes contributions to the profession and practice of Forestry by someone who is not a Member.

Honourary Member

A non-member of the Association who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of forestry in Ontario may be awarded Honourary Membership in the Association by unanimous consent of Council.  Consideration of Honourary Membership is initiated by nomination, in writing, by at least six active Association members in good standing.  Honourary Membership is approved by the Recognition and Awards Committee prior to consideration by Council.  No more than one Honourary Member may be elected in any given year.  Honourary Members may comprise no more than one percent of the Association membership at any given time.  Honourary Members are exempt from payment of dues and may attend meetings but do not have the right to vote.

Certificates of Appreciation

Certificates of Appreciation are presented to individuals in recognition of significant contribution to the Ontario Professional Foresters Association.  There are no limits on the number of certificates presented each year, nor on the number of certificates an individual may receive over time.

Criteria
The recipient will be a member of the Association and will have assisted the Association by serving on a committee or board, by organizing an annual meeting or by providing other service.

Nominations
Nominations may be made by any member of the Association, by the Executive Director or by the Awards & Recognition Committee and must be received by the Chairman of the Awards & Recognition Committee no later than the last Friday in February each year.

Each nomination shall indicate the type of service which has been provided by the member being nominated.  The final selection is made by the Awards & Recognition Committee.
