Current Issues

A few of the current issues facing Ontario’s urban forests, as identified by OPFA's Urban Forestry Committe include (in no specific order):

  • invasive species,
  • climate change,
  • urbanization and in-fill development,
  • difficult growing environments
    • road salt,
    • lack of growing space above and below-ground,
    • poor soil quality, etc.
  • lack of management planning standards,
  • lack of provincial and federal involvement,
  • limited educational/training opportunities for urban forestry professionals
